The Faxi waterfall is known by a few names, Faxa, Faxafoss, and Vatnsleysufoss. Tucked away in farmlands, Faxi spans 300 ft (91 m) with a height of 23 ft (7 m) across the Tungufljót river. This waterfall is located in the “Golden Circle” upper region near Gullfoss and Geysir.

Brúarárfoss, also known as Brúarfoss, is titled “Iceland’s Bluest Waterfall.” It’s a small waterfall at only around 10 ft (3 m) in height, but it’s known for its horseshoe-like shape and vivid blue water. The glacial river Brúará creates the waterfall and is sourced from the Langjökull glacier. The bright blue waters are only exacerbated as Brúarárfoss plunges into the crevice that it creates within the dark volcanic rock.

Urriðafoss is Iceland’s largest waterfall in volume, with a high river drop rate of 12,700 cfs (360 cms). The waterfall is located on the Þjórsá, the longest river in Iceland. In Icelandic, Urriðafoss translates to “Trout Waterfall.” The Þjórsá is a famous river for salmon and trout fishing. Even seals are reported to travel up the river to Urriðafoss to catch salmon.

Gluggafoss, also known as Merkjárfoss, is a two-tiered waterfall located on the Merkjá River in the Southern Region. The Merkjá River has many beautiful waterfalls, but Gluggafoss is the most significant. Gluggafoss is increasing in popularity, but it is still a relatively overlooked waterfall.

Foss á Síðu is a commonly seen waterfall that is frequently passed. This waterfall is located in the Southern Region and is viewable from the Ring Road (Route 1). Foss á Síðu is not a mighty waterfall, but its slender cascade against the dark cliffside and vivid greenery makes it truly beautiful. Many would be surprised to learn that Foss á Síðu is Iceland’s 14th tallest waterfall.
